Why the polls don’t really matter.

At least some of them don’t.

If you go out and interview everyone in the US and 52% go for McCain and 48% go for Obama, it means NOTHING.  We don’t vote that way.  We vote through the electoral college.  Without knowing how the votes are arranged, you can’t tell anything.  Take a look at CNN’s electoral map.
Obama is up by, say, 20% (226 to 189).

However, the general polls show things much closer with Obama at 49% and McCain at 44%.
