Librarian wins(?) Harry Potter discrimination case?
Well, settles, at least. I little reading shows the complaint a bit like this.
Religious nutjob doesn’t want to work supporting Harry Potter book release event.
Library has entire week focusing on the release.
Library has big party about release.
Nutjob wants no truck with it.
Library ‘gives’ her a week off without pay.
Nutjob says it was suspension. Library says it was the only way to meet her needs.
Now, from the above, its obvious how I feel about the woman, especially one who helps get books into the hands of our kids. Might she also object to allowing kids to check out Potter?
Anyhow, I thought about it a bit, and ultimately I side with her. This is what made me click:
Anti-Harry Potter Librarian’s Case Magically Settles
The library director had offered to let Smith help out behind the scenes “in a way that Plaintiff’s church community would not know she had participated.”
That is simply not acceptable. If my workplace wanted to hold an event praising the release of a new bible, I wouldn’t want to help out at all. And I don’t think I should be penalized. Helping out ‘behind the scenes’ is not an OK compromise.
