Hack your camera to get RAW!
A while ago, I bought a Canon SD850 and was surprised it didn’t come with the RAW format (which I assumed was standard at this point). Anyhow, not THAT big of a deal at the time, but as I’ve gotten more and more into Photoshop, I’m starting to see some advantages. Plus, it works much better with HDR, as I understand it.
Thank goodness for the CHKDK Firmware hack. That link takes you to the Wired quickstart guide to the thing. For more detail, here’s the CHKDK Wiki. I haven’t spent much time with the thing yet, but it does appear to have worked. I’m looking forward to spending some real time with the wiki (like, say, today). RAW is just one of the many features that get opened thanks to this.
For Mac users, I had a problem I should share. I downloaded the firmware hack, unzipped it, put it on my memory card, and didn’t get the firmware upgrade option as promised. The wiki, of course, had the solution. Just a heads up.
